The Fresh Air Fund is a not-for-profit agency that was founded in 1877, and has been providing New York City kids from low-income communities fabulous summer vacations ever since.
Every year thousands of kids from New York City get to experience life in the country as well as life-changing experiences. While volunteering my services with the Fund, I was able to see first hand the fantastic opportunities these kids have, as well as the rewarding relationships it brings to participants as well as the host families.
Swimming, sailing, biking, and hiking are a just a few of the activities kids visiting the East End of Long Island get to master.
Both families I visited have had their Fresh Air “brother” and “sister” for several consecutive summers and friendships have blossomed over the years.
The host families in the Hamptons recognize their wonderful surroundings and are eager to share with those who are less fortunate. I have seen children of host families selflessly share their parents and their home.
It is hard to say who benefits more.
