The Fulton Fish Market

As a photographer,  I am always interested in finding new experiences and colorful places to explore.  For some reason, and one which I can’t explain, visiting the Fulton Fish Market, has long been on my bucket list.

Originally located next to the financial district, the market relocated to the Hunt’s Point section of the Bronx in 2005.

Second in size only to Tokyo’s wholesale seafood market, the Fulton Fish Market is busiest in the early morning hours when fishmongers, chefs and top restaurateurs negotiate for the freshest catch.

So on a recent rainy day, at the ungodly hour of two AM, I accompanied Rick Ross, the owner of Eastchester Fish Gourmet and his trusty sidekick Florentino as they made their way through pounds of grouper, tuna, swordfish, halibut, bluefish, salmon, and lobster.

The Fulton market did not disappoint.  I enjoyed meeting the colorful characters involved in this industry, as well as capturing some interesting images to share.

Note to insomniacs: Not a bad place to spend the wee hours of the morning.
